Around Obernai:

Mont Saint-Odile

Of all the Alsacian archaeological sites, Mont Sainte-Odile is one of the most famous. Its history may have begun during the Gallic period, between the end of the 2nd century and the beginning of the 1st century B.C., with the construction of a gigantic defensive wall known as the "pagan wall".

In the 7th century, the creation of a convent for women founded by the duke of Alsace, Etichon and ran by his daughter Odile made Mont Saint-Odile a great site of Christendom and an important center of pilgrimage. Besides, the first abbess' tomb can be seen in the monastery of Hohenbourg.

The wine road.

Over the past 50 years, the Alsace Wine Road has contributed to the success of Alsace wines. It has become famous all over the world for the exceptional natural beauty of its scenery, for how easy it is to follow, and for the way it makes the visitor feel close to the region and its winegrowers.

The
Alsace Wine Road winds its way from north to south, for more than 170 kilometres, along the eastern foothills of the Vosges. This delightful itinerary runs across a succession of undulating hills, through pretty villages with narrow streets of flower-decked, half-timbered houses, clustered around their church steeple.

Alsace wine road visitors can easily explore the heart of the vineyards, along numerous vineyard paths leading to the crest of each slope, where signs explain the work of the winegrower and the diversity of the grape varieties.
They are welcomed into "winstubs" and tasting cellars to instantly discover the traditional appeal of the vine and the wine.

Christmas in Alsace:

The magic of Christmas in Alsace begins on St Catherine's Day, November 25. The region quickly gets into the Christmas spirit, with more than 35 Christmas markets organised throughout Alsace's 7 lands of Christmas. The Christmas fun reaches a crescendo during the last four weeks leading up to Christmas (the Advent period), and comes to a gentle end on January 6 (epiphany).

During this preparatory period, the homes and streets are brought to life with Christmas decorations and in this fairytale setting you may well bump into the Christkindel, Hans Trapp, or St Nicolas during your travels, all legendary characters associated with Christmastime in Alsace.

As a leading French gastronomic region, Alsace is well-known for its many Christmas delicacies. Spices, foie gras, bredele, and mulled wine all provide great opportunities to share some unforgettable moments of fun and merriment.

Strasbourg: the oldest Christmas market in France

Ever since 1570, each year Strasbourg has hosted its Christmas market, the famous "Christkindelsmärik", making this the oldest Christmas market in France! The magic really begins in the late afternoon as evening falls. The windows sparkle with their Christmas lights, the facades are brought to life by the decorations and the streets are filled with the delicious aromas of spices and cinnamon. In Place Kléber, the huge Christmas tree erected there from mid-November onwards never fails to delight strollers.

The Christmas market in Obernai.

In the birthplace of Sainte-Odile, everyone plays their part in preparing for the Christmas festivities. From November onwards, the town is gradually decked out with Christmas trees and Christmas lights much to the delight of adults and children alike. From the first day of December onwards, Obernai is transformed into a magical winter wonderland, where visitors can enjoy a traditional old-style Christmas. All of the producers present on the Marché de la Gastronomie (food market) are from Alsace, and propose a range of high-quality food products carefully selected for their diversity and complementarity.
